Type Locality and Naming

The type section is at area 12 km southwest of Village Yinzhi, 66 km southwest of Aksu City, Xinjiang. The Qilang Fm was named by Qiao Xindong and Zhang Tairong in 1973, and was published by Xinjiang Compiling Group for Regional Stratigraphic Scale (1981).

Lithology and Thickness

The Formation is represented by a rhythm of gray thin-bedded calcilutite, nodular calcilutite and green calcareous or silty shale. In the type area, the Qilang Fm is 168 m thick.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

It rests conformably on the purple nodular marl of the Kanling Fm

Upper contact

It is conformably overlain by the black marl at the base of the Yingan Fm

Fossils

The lower part yields graptolites of Corynoides americanus assemblage. Apart from the nautiloids reported by Lai and Wang (1986), there are Michelinoceras elongatus, conodont Scabbardella altipes, Dapsilodus nutatus, trilobites Xiushuilithus, Cyclopyge recurva, ostracod Paraplatyrhomoboides producta and acritarch Dichotisphaera caradocensis also found from the Qilang Fm. Lai (1982) reported cephalopod Sinoceras chinense from the Qilang Fm
